Ten years ago today, Werner Enterprises partnered with the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs to start the industry’s first Professional Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program. The innovative work-based learning program began with 1,043 apprentices with 117 of those using their GI Bill education benefits to invest in a future with Werner.
This apprenticeship is available for any driver with less than 24 months of experience and who is not a trainer or an owner operator. Eligible veterans, veteran spouses and veteran dependents can receive up to $22,555.20 tax-free of their GI Bill education benefits in addition to their normal pay for two years. Applicants do not have to be a veteran to participate in the program.
On June 12, 2015, Werner extended the apprenticeship program from 12 to 24 months and now more than 32,275 drivers have enrolled with over 4,500 using their GI Bill benefits. Werner expects to have its 35,000th total enrollee by year’s end. The success of this program led to other successful apprenticeship efforts at Werner.
In another industry first, Werner launched the first Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Program in 2015. Partnering again with the Department of Labor, Werner became one of the first ApprenticeshipUSA Leaders. Today, 167 companies have joined ApprenticeshipUSA’s efforts of finding and training dedicated workers to help grow the nation’s economy.
Werner Enterprises was recently designated a Best for Vets Employer by the Military Times for the second consecutive year. The publication’s annual list recognizes 75 companies for exemplary hiring efforts and employment benefits for military veterans and spouses.
Werner’s survey-based ranking included several performance areas identified by the Military Times:
· Number of military veteran associates
· Number of 2015 military veteran hires

· Military veteran spouse policies
Since 2011, Werner has hired more than 7,550 military veterans and has pledged to hire 2,000 military veterans in 2016. Since May 2013, Werner has hired more than 400 military veteran spouses.
“We take great pride in our military veteran associates and we will continue to invest in their success here at Werner,” said President and Chief Operating Officer Derek Leathers. “We hope their numbers grow as we continue to expand our methods to support their transition.”
Werner Enterprises, along with more than 40 other organizations, participated in a ceremony Dec. 11 at the Pentagon. At the statement-of-support event, employers affirmed their support of Guard and Reserve employees and pledged to advocate for them as they pursue their careers and fulfill their military obligations.
Representing Werner at the ceremony was Rick Buchholz, associate director of Field and Government Recruiting.

“We owe our military veterans a huge debt of gratitude for the sacrifices they make while serving our country,” President and COO Derek Leathers said. “With that in mind, it has become our mission to create the best opportunities available for veterans and their families as they return to civilian life and transition to new careers.”
Werner widely has been acknowledged for its efforts to ease the transition of military veterans into the workplace, including its Professional Truck Driver Apprenticeship that allows veterans to use their benefits to pay for training while receiving on-the-job instruction.
Werner has hired more than 6,500 veterans since 2012 and more than 350 veteran spouses since May 2013, surpassing the pledge it made in 2012 under the White House campaign Joining Forces to hire 1,000 veterans per year for the next five years.
