Werner Receives Recognition from the Department of Defense

Werner Enterprises has been honored once again by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, receiving two certificates issued from the Department of Defense.

Jim Morbach, senior director of Student and Government Recruiting, accepted the 2015 Employer Support Freedom Award Finalist certificate from ESGR volunteer Ron Strawn. Ned Holmes, employer support director for Nebraska, presented Rick Buchholz, government hiring manager, with the 2015 Employer Support Freedom Award nominee certificate.

Each year, Guard and Reserve employees, or a family member acting on their behalf, have the opportunity to nominate their employer for the Freedom Award. The Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their outstanding support of employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.

Werner Signs Statement of Support for Employee Service in the National Guard and Reserve

Bob Synowicki, executive vice president of Driver Resources, signed a Statement of Support for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve during a June 18 ceremony at Werner’s headquarters in Omaha, Neb. He was joined by Tom Bullock, ESGR chief of employer outreach.

“Werner is honored and excited to offer so many lifelong career opportunities for our veterans and their spouses,” Synowicki said. “We are proud to make this pledge and reinforce our commitment to support our military.”

The ESGR Statement of Support program is the cornerstone of ESGR’s efforts to gain and maintain employer support of the Guard and Reserve. The intent of this program is to increase employer support by encouraging employers to act as advocates for employee participation in the military.

“Today, supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units,” Bullock said. “Werner Enterprises is setting a high standard for all Nebraska employers to follow the lead in providing above and beyond support of Nebraska’s veterans, many of whom currently serve in the Guard and Reserve. By meeting the Statement of Support criteria, Werner Enterprises will stand proudly with their Guard and Reserve employees who continue to answer their nation’s call to defend our way of life. Their personal sacrifices are essential to the strength of our nation.”

Happy Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, we honor the memory of the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. We also wish to recognize and thank all veterans for their service, commitment and bravery.

Werner Enterprises Associate Receives ESGR Patriot Award

Werner Enterprises is proud to announce that Andy King, associate director – West/Central and Canada, has been presented with a Patriot Award by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

King was nominated by Kyle Bonnstetter, Van Network customer service project manager and a member of the Nebraska Reserve. The award is presented to individual supervisors and reflects the efforts made to support members of the Guard or Reserve through a wide range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.

King’s presentation marks the fifth time a member of the Werner Enterprises team has been recognized with the Patriot Award. Other recipients include Dave Aldridge, Kenny Luchetta, John McCord and Chris Polenz.

Werner Enterprises Named a 2015 Top Military Friendly Employer

For the tenth straight year, Werner Enterprises has been recognized as a 2015 Top Military Friendly Employer by G.I. Jobs magazine. The magazine ranks companies on the strength of their military recruiting efforts, percentage of new hires with prior military service and policies toward National Guard and Reserve services.

Werner, widely acknowledged for its efforts to ease the transition of military veterans into the workplace, continues to support our country’s veterans and their spouses. Werner’s Professional Truck Driver Apprenticeship, developed in 2006, was the first of its kind to be approved by the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs and allows veterans to use their GI Bill benefits to pay for training while receiving on-the-job instruction.

In 2012, Werner pledged to hire 1,000 veterans per year for the next five years through 2016. As of February 2015, Werner had hired 5,425 veterans and 204 veteran spouses. Military veterans comprise 20 percent of Werner’s driver workforce and 15 percent of all company associates.

Werner Enterprises and Senator Deb Fischer Honor Professional Driver with Flag Presentation

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer visited Werner’s global headquarters today to help Werner recognize professional driver and military veteran David Green.

Green recently earned a spot on the prestigious American Trucking Associations (ATA) 2015-2016 America’s Road Team, and a flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of his achievements. Fischer presented the flag, along with a certificate, to him during a ceremony in front of an audience of Werner associates and professional drivers.

“I am proud to be a professional truck driver and represent our industry and Werner on America’s Road Team,” Green said. “It is an honor to receive this symbol of our country that I volunteered to fight for years ago.”

Selected from 31 finalists and thousands of potential applicants, Green, who drives Freedom 2, will serve as a captain with 18 other professional drivers and travel the country speaking on behalf of the trucking industry and its more than 3 million drivers to communities, news media and public officials while maintaining his job as a full-time professional driver.
